This program is designed to educate you about the risks associated with online banking and provide you with the knowledge and tools to protect yourself.
Understanding Authentication Risks
Authentication is the process of verifying your identity when you access your online banking account. Here are some common authentication risks and how you can mitigate them:
1. Phishing
Phishing is an attempt to steal your personal information by pretending to be a trustworthy entity. Be cautious of unsolicited emails, text messages, or phone calls asking for your login credentials.
How to Protect Yourself:
Never share your login credentials with anyone.
Verify the sender’s email address before clicking on any links.
Report suspicious emails or messages to securityissues@fergusonfcu.org. (You will not receive a reply from this email address.)
2. Password Security
Weak passwords can be easily guessed by attackers. Use strong and unique passwords for your online banking account.
How to Protect Yourself:
Create a password that is at least 12 characters long, including numbers, symbols, and both uppercase and lowercase letters.
Avoid using easily guessable information like your name or birthdate.
Change your password regularly and do not reuse passwords across different sites.
3. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
2FA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification in addition to your password.
How to Protect Yourself:
Enable 2FA on your online banking account.
Use an authentication app or receive SMS codes for the second form of verification.
Do not share your 2FA codes with anyone.
Best Practices for Online Banking Security
1. Secure Your Devices
Ensure that the devices you use for online banking are secure.
How to Protect Yourself:
Install antivirus software and keep it updated.
Keep your operating system and applications up to date with the latest security patches.
Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for online banking.
2. Monitor Your Accounts
Regularly check your account statements and transaction history for any unauthorized activity.
How to Protect Yourself:
Set up account alerts to receive notifications of suspicious activity.
Immediately report any unauthorized transactions to Member Services.
3. Recognize Secure Websites
Ensure that the website you are accessing is secure before entering your login credentials.
How to Protect Yourself:
Look for https:// at the beginning of the website URL.
Check for a padlock icon in the address bar.
Be cautious of look-alike websites with slight misspellings in the URL.
